How to Choose the Right Book

There are many books on business Japanese emails for learners, each with its own focus. It’s important to find the one that best suits your needs.

Does it match your level?

Since these books cover professional topics, you will need a certain level of Japanese proficiency.

We recommend having at least JLPT N3 for effective self-study.

Keep in mind that some books do not include furigana (reading aids for kanji), which may require a higher level of reading skill.

Bilingual Explanations?

Some books provide explanations in English or Chinese, which can help deepen your understanding.

If you prefer learning in your native language, look for these versions.

Most bilingual books use English.

Note that while some are fully translated, others may only provide English definitions for specific vocabulary.

Recommended Books

The books listed below are focused on business correspondence, so at least N3-level Japanese is recommended.

Depending on your current proficiency, some materials may feel a bit challenging.

外国人のための仕事のメールの書き方

Personally, I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to practice writing business emails in Japanese.

It is structured like a textbook, allowing you to learn essential grammar along the way.

Beyond just introducing phrases, the book includes practical exercises with answer keys, making it an excellent resource for self-study.

日本語でビジネスメール

This book is perfect for those who want to learn a wide variety of business Japanese phrases.

With 223 examples categorized into “External,” “Internal,” and “General” themes, you can use it just like a dictionary.

While it’s packed with useful phrases and examples, it might feel a bit lacking for those who want hands-on practice in writing emails from scratch.

しごとの日本語 (メ-ルの書き方編)

This is also a great choice for those who want to learn a wide range of practical phrases.

It includes applied exercises, allowing you to practice and output what you’ve learned.

However, one thing to keep in mind is that it does not include furigana, which might make it challenging for those with lower Japanese proficiency.

Also, since it was published about 20 years ago, it doesn’t cover modern chat tools like Slack or Teams, so you may need to learn those separately.

That said, the fundamental rules of business communication remain the same, so this book still covers the essentials well.

日本で働くための本

While this book isn’t specifically focused on business emails, it covers a wide range of Japanese office rules and etiquette.

It’s highly recommended for anyone who wants to gain a comprehensive understanding of Japanese corporate culture and business manners, not just for emails and formal documents.

外国人のためのビジネス文書の書き方

Although this book doesn’t focus on emails, it is an excellent resource for mastering formal business documents.

It is highly recommended for those who frequently write reports or official papers in a Japanese office, or for anyone looking to learn professional writing rules.

With its in-depth coverage, this is the perfect choice for those who truly want to master the art of Japanese business documentation.

mailun-lab Original Materials

In addition to the books mentioned above, mailun-lab offers original study materials specifically designed for business Japanese emails.

Our texts include furigana for all kanji and provide English translations (with a few exceptions), making them highly accessible for learners.

Beyond just teaching basic rules, manners, and phrases, our materials help you understand Japanese corporate culture and answer the “Why?” behind the customs.

We go beyond simple phrase memorization.

By understanding the underlying reasons and the Japanese way of thinking, you will learn how to choose the right words for yourself.

At mailun-lab, our goal is to help you “build trust through your writing.”

We want you to be able to express your thoughts genuinely in your own words, rather than just repeating pre-set phrases.

Conclusion

Japanese business emails involve many unique rules and etiquette, so everyone struggles at first.

While you can always look things up online, having a reliable book on hand will save you a lot of time spent searching and second-guessing.

Take a look at the books we’ve introduced and choose the one that best fits your needs and current level.

Once you have your book, don’t just read it—use it as a “dictionary” or a “template” to actually start writing your own emails.

  1. Find an example that matches your situation.
  2. Follow the structure and plug in your own words.
  3. Once finished, double-check your draft against the etiquette tips in the book.

You don’t need to aim for “perfect” Japanese. What matters most is that you are polite and that your message is conveyed clearly and accurately.

Choose the right book for you, and start writing your emails more smoothly and with more confidence from tomorrow!

To help you overcome these challenges, mailun-lab offers specialized learning materials for Japanese business email writing.
